Riley's vest is finally complete! I had our tailor sew on the velcro backing for her "Service Dog" and "Training" patches because the vest was too thick for my needle. If you start in the upper left corner and go clockwise her patches are : "Do Not Pet [STOP] Do Not Distract, CGC, AKC Star Puppy, "Training", and "Service Dog". The red heart tag in the middle is her rabies vaccine ID.

I picked this layout because she always heels on my left side. This is the side people will typically be approaching, so I wanted them to very clearly see the "Do Not Pet" and "Service Dog" patches.
We opted for the Ruffwear Web Master Harness in Medium to use as her Service Dog vest. It's a great harness and it's working well so far. I looked at a couple other Service Dog vests and I wasn't too pleased with the construction or the way they fit the dog. Most looked like they would rub Riley's armpits and belly. The Ruffwear harness was a bit more expensive, but it fits her perfectly and she is very comfortable wearing it for long periods.

I ordered two sets of patches. One set was a custom order from Bull Shoals Embroidery on Etsy and the other was from the Mutiny Shop. I ended up using the Bull Shoals Embrodery patches because they stood out more and matched the style of the vest better.

I sewed most of the patches myself using the blind (or slip) stitch method. It took a few hours to get them all on, but it was worth the effort! We're ready to make our first trip to a nearby store. Wish us luck! :)
Riley's patches have arrived! I ordered them from The Mutiny Shop down in LA and I'm really pleased with the quality. These patches attach using velcro, so I'm having a tailor sew velcro to the vest. When her training is completed, I can remove the "TRAINING" patch and replace it with another "SERVICE DOG" patch. The tailor says her vest will be ready by Tuesday. I'll post a few pictures with her vest once it's completed!

*Update - Since posting this, I have received a second set of custom patches from Bull Shoals Embroidery on Etsy. I decided to go with those patches instead because they match the style of the vest better. I may still use these patches in future on another vest.
Now that Riley's passed her CGC exam (woohoo!) I've started working on public access training. I'm starting out very slowly to make sure she masters it completely and isn't overwhelmed or stressed. Our first outings have been to "The Habit Burger Grill" by our house. They have a nice outdoor patio with heaters, so we can sit outside at night and enjoy a nice dinner while Riley learns to chill in a down stay. My husband and I have taken her twice and each time she's been better at laying still and ignoring people coming in and out of the restaurant.

One of Riley's bad habits I'm working to break is snacking on food that
falls on the ground while I'm eating. She's come a long way! Right now I
have to say "leave it" if something falls, but I'm hoping that with
lots of repetition she will learn that when food falls on the ground
it's off limits.

We had lunch at a restaurant on Saturday
outdoors and I practiced "leave it" by dropping bits of steak. She did
perfectly and didn't even go for it when I picked up all the pieces
after the recording ended. :)

In other good news, I'm officially in training to become a trainer at Zoom Room Campbell! I'm just working part-time on the weekends, but it's been so much fun! My passion in life is training dogs. This has been such a wonderful experience so far. I love seeing when people (and pups) connect and the light bulb turns on during training.

Riley is also learning some advanced tricks, with Kim's help. She's mastered "roll over", commands from a distance of over 20 feet (down, roll over, recall with a "wait" as she comes toward me so she freezes in place, etc.), and she's learning how to ring a bell on command. I can't wait to see what the next few months have in store for us! :D
One of my other passions in life is watercolor painting. I haven't done any paintings in ages, so please go easy on me! I did this quick painting of Riley today using watercolor pencils. She's such a gorgeous girl. Watercolors definitely don't do her pretty face justice. Please let me know what you think!

The pups are having a blast on our vacation! We found a park called "Canine Commons" where dogs run off-leash through long grasses & can chase after birds. We've met 1 wire haired Vizsla and 2 short haired Vizslas on our walks. All the pups have been very well-behaved!
We are going wine tasting today at "dog-friendly" wineries. I'll make a list of our favorites and post here for your reference. Happy Thursday everyone!

Her favorite obstacles are the A-Frame and the Jumps. She's not a huge fan of the Tunnel, but after a few tries she ran through like a pro! Agility class has been an excellent confidence builder for Riley and has also built up her endurance. We used to finish class and she would nap for at least half an hour. We got home from class on Sunday and she immediately brought me a toy for a game of fetch. Crazy pup!

Reuben (my amazing hubby) made a video compilation of her last Agility 1 class and her second Agility 2 class so you can see the progression from the first video.
Also, I have more exciting news! I will be working part-time (weekends) at the Zoom Room in Campbell once I have completed training/shadowing. I've always loved working with pups and I'm looking forward to being part of an excellent center!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00129400119501421007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6097006319128873953.post-21024275935255152122014-08-22T13:49:00.001-07:002014-08-22T13:50:55.236-07:00New Adventure!

Riley's CGC patch arrived in the mail this morning! I am excited to announce that with passing this exam, we will be embarking on a new adventure (no pun intended!).

Over the course of the next few months, Riley is going to be a service dog in training. Her new harness arrived in the mail yesterday & we took it on a test drive to our new local shopping center. They gave us 4 tickets for free hamburgers! (Riley is excited to try one.)

I've also ordered a special "New Trix" halter for practicing heel in high-traffic areas. I love the way it has nice padding for the nose & clips at the back of the head. Riley's at-home task training is coming along well. She can now go grab a small pouch and bring it to me on command. We'll be enlisting the help of a professional trainer to fine-tune her tasks.

I'll be updating this blog as her training progresses, so please check back to see how we are doing!

We took him into the vet for stitches and he somehow ripped a few of them out a few days later. The vet said we could either get the wound re-stitched or we could do a daily soak in a special solution and keep him from messing with it and let it heal on its own. We opted for soaking the leg, which worked to keep it clean, but no matter what we tried he was still able to lick the wound. I even had him in a plastic cone AND the inflatable collar at one point and watched him very carefully perform some kind of insane yoga move to get his leg up and around in front of his face for licking.

How??? How could he still reach his leg???

I was about to give up, but then an idea came to me.

What if we could keep a loose covering over the wound, such as a sock, that would allow it to breathe but prevent licking? The first time we tried pulling the sock up and taping it to his leg with medical tape. This worked... for like 5 minutes until the tape lost its stickiness, the sock fell down, and the licking resumed. Next, we tried electrical tape. It was much stronger and held up better, but every time we changed the sock for a clean one it pulled his hair out and aggravated his skin. Back to the drawing board! I decided the only way to hold up the sock would be to cut holes by the top of it and somehow tie an anchor line around his body. This worked really well... until he sat/lay down and then it slipped off his butt. Finally, I had a crazy idea to tie an anchor line through the sock, up over his back, loop it through a harness, and back down to the sock. This was the best idea so far, but it was a bit loose and allowed the sock to slip off a little when he lay down. I then took the anchor line and taped it together about 6-7 inches out from the spot where it went through the harness and SUCCESS!

Cooper modeling the De-Licker 4000 (patent pending!)

His wound is now 95% healed and we no longer have to hook him up to this crazy contraption. We'll be keeping this setup for future use just in case!

I am proud to announce that on Saturday Riley passed her CGC test! Her new AKC name will now be Living the Life of Riley, CGC. I always wanted to try passing the test, but didn't think Riley could remain calm enough. When our trainer at Zoom Room said she was ready, I had my doubts. Riley breezed through the test without any issues! I put her in a down-wait for the last test item, which is staying with a stranger for 3 minutes while I was out of sight. She stayed laying down the entire 3 minutes & didn't break until I walked back up to her and released her! I'm so excited for our next steps in training. We'll be taking some therapy dog classes as well as doing some extra training for a special project. I'll make sure to update as she progresses!

With the dog sitting at the handler's side, to begin the exercise, the evaluator pets the dog on the head and body. The handler may talk to his or her dog throughout the exercise. The dog may stand in place as it is petted. The dog must not show shyness or resentment.

It also demonstrates the owner's care, concern and sense of responsibility. The evaluator inspects the dog to determine if it is clean and groomed. The dog must appear to be in healthy condition (i.e., proper weight, clean, healthy and alert). The handler should supply the comb or brush commonly used on the dog. The evaluator then softly combs or brushes the dog, and in a natural manner, lightly examines the ears and gently picks up each front foot. It is not necessary for the dog to hold a specific position during the examination, and the handler may talk to the dog, praise it and give encouragement throughout.

The dog's position should leave no doubt that the dog is attentive to the handler and is responding to the handler's movements and changes of direction. The dog need not be perfectly aligned with the handler and need not sit when the handler stops. The evaluator may use a pre-plotted course or may direct the handler/dog team by issuing instructions or commands. In either case, there should be a right turn, left turn, and an about turn with at least one stop in between and another at the end. The handler may talk to the dog along the way, praise the dog, or give commands in a normal tone of voice. The handler may sit the dog at the halts if desired.

The dog may show some interest in the strangers but should continue to walk with the handler, without evidence of over-exuberance, shyness or resentment. The handler may talk to the dog and encourage or praise the dog throughout the test. The dog should not jump on people in the crowd or strain on the leash.

This test demonstrates that the dog has training, will respond to the handler's commands to sit and down and will remain in the place commanded by the handler (sit or down position, whichever the handler prefers). The dog must do sit AND down on command, then the owner chooses the position for leaving the dog in the stay. Prior to this test, the dog's leash is replaced with a line 20 feet long. The handler may take a reasonable amount of time and use more than one command to get the dog to sit and then down. The evaluator must determine if the dog has responded to the handler's commands. The handler may not force the dog into position but may touch the dog to offer gentle guidance. When instructed by the evaluator, the handler tells the dog to stay and walks forward the length of the line, turns and returns to the dog at a natural pace. The dog must remain in the place in which it was left (it may change position) until the evaluator instructs the handler to release the dog. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other. Neither dog should go to the other dog or its handler.

The dog may express natural interest and curiosity and/or may appear slightly startled but should not panic, try to run away, show aggressiveness, or bark. Evaluators are encouraged to say something like, "Would you like me to watch your dog?" and then take hold of the dog's leash. The owner will go out of sight for three minutes. The dog does not have to stay in position but should not continually bark, whine, or pace unnecessarily, or show anything stronger than mild agitation or nervousness. Evaluators may talk to the dog but should not engage in excessive talking, petting, or management attempts (e.g, "there, there, it's alright")."

This morning Riley went on a hike with Louie & Risco! Poor Cooper had to stay at home because his leg is still healing. We hiked a new area we've never been before called the Morgan Territory Regional Preserve.

Riley got to try out the OutFox Field Guard for the first time. She allowed me to slip it on and promptly forgot it was even there! I was very impressed that she could drink with it on and even carry sticks around. We'll be investing in two of these very soon to protect our pups!

I've decided to start a "Top 10" series for my favorite Vizsla things. Vizslas are so different from other dogs that it has taken me years to find the perfect toys, treats, training aids, etc. for my pups. Please feel free to comment if you have another toy suggestion!

I had to search for AGES to find a stuffed toy that Riley couldn't destroy within minutes. I like to joke that stuffed toys typically last 1 minute for every $1 spent on the toy. Tuffy Toys are the only exception. They actually have a "toughness" scale that is very accurate. I try to stick with toys that are 7+ on the scale. My pups' favorite is their Tuffy the Stegosaurus. It's pretty entertaining to watch Vizslas chew on and play tug-o-war with a small dinosaur!

#2 - Kong Extreme

When Riley was younger, we purchased her a "puppy" Kong. About 3 days after we gave this to her, I noticed she was eating it. Yes, eating chunks out of her puppy kong. At 10 weeks old. I quickly tossed it and went hunting for something more durable. We tried the regular (red) Kongs with the same result. The Kong Extreme, however, has withstood the test of time! We've had one for 2 years now that looks brand new. It's really easy to keep clean (soap and warm water), plus you can stuff it with treats and even freeze food inside it for more of a challenge.

#3 - Chuckit

Let's face it. There comes a time when your puppy grows up and can easily outrun your farthest thrown ball. Vizslas hit this development point much quicker than most other dogs. Fun fact: the Vizsla is in the top 10 fastest dog breeds and can hit speeds of up to 40 mph. Thank goodness for the Chuckit! Side note: DO NOT use regular tennis balls with your Chuckit. Take the ball that comes with it and toss it in the trash. Tennis balls will wear down your pup's teeth and can cause major dental issues.
If you're looking for a ball to use *instead* of the tennis ball with your Chuckit, look no further! The Orbee-Tuff ball was highly recommended by our trainer. I was somewhat skeptical at first because it seems very soft and flimsy, but the way it is designed allows the ball to collapse when your pup bites on it and then pop right back out into its original shape. My two adore it and it also glows in the dark for easy spotting. The minty smell is an added bonus!

Riley and Cooper both go absolutely nuts for these toys! I'll admit, it can be a bit freaky if you forgot that you gave your pup a toy that looks like a gutted animal and they come trotting up to you with paws and a fluffy tail hanging out of their mouth. Riley tends to destroy these fairly quickly, but plays tug-o-war with Cooper over the bits for months until they are too small. Then they get swept up and tossed. Skinneeez are relatively inexpensive, so I don't feel like my money has been wasted.
When Riley was a baby puppy, the Kong Wobbler was a lifesaver. We used to fill it with a measured portion of kibble for each meal and she would work at it for at least 20-30 minutes to get her food out. You can also fill it with little bits of dry treats. The wobbler is weighted on the bottom half, so your pup has to push it back and forth to get the food/treats out. I highly recommend it, especially if you want to keep your Vizsla occupied.

The Orka Jack has a strange name with an even stranger look. Why do my pups love it? Because of the bounce! It is completely unpredictable, unlike a ball. It bounces around randomly and Riley goes nuts chasing after it. This is NOT a chew toy. Let me make this very clear - if you are looking for a chew toy, do NOT purchase this toy. It is a fun toy for chasing and playing but will not hold up to strong chewers. Riley has torn small chunks out of this thing when we weren't paying attention. I still think it's a great toy with a lot of entertainment potential!

The past few weeks have been eventful ones for my two pups! Riley was moved up to Obedience 3 after only two classes. The instructor said we were definitely read to prep for CGC! Her first Obedience 3 class went VERY well. She did a good job of focusing even when presented with distractions.

The video below shows her in a down-stay while I picked up toys and put them in a basket. She didn't budge the entire time, even when the dog on the other side stood up and grabbed a toy. Good girl!

I've also decided to try Agility with Riley now that her knee is completely healed from her 2nd surgery. We've been supplementing her Orijen 6-Fish Grain-Free Kibble
with glucosamine supplements. She has almost 100% range of motion back in her bad knee with no limping and very minimal stiffness. I actually had someone say they couldn't tell she had knee surgery! I used to feed her a soft chew supplement from Petco, but I picked up a new brand at my vet called Synovi G4 Soft Chews. The vet highly recommended them and I'm happy we only have to give 1 chew per day compared with 4 chews a day from the Petco brand. This will cut our costs down from $40 a month to $17.50 a month! I have to thank our amazing vets at UC Davis for fixing her poor knee. We will be making a donation in Riley's name as soon as we have paid off all her medical bills. :)

My husband put together this awesome video of her second Agility class at Zoom Room. She is getting so much more confident and her tail wags like crazy the entire class! We're practicing the A-Frame, Pause Table, Tunnel, Weave, Jump, and Tire. She's in Agility 1, which is designed to get the pups comfortable around the equipment. Our trainer always moves the bar up on the jump because she loves to watch her gracefully glide over the top
In other sad news, Cooper cut his leg really badly on Saturday. I walked into our living room to find our couch covered in blood. Both pups were super happy and peppy bouncing around like nothing had happened, so we had to inspect them one at a time. Cooper let out a small squeal when Reuben grabbed his back left paw. I was very shocked to find a huge gash that was so deep it left muscle exposed. Needless to say, we immediately scooped him up and took him to the emergency vet. 3 hours and $400 later, we were on our way home with a loopy, stitched up pup.
Vet bills are expensive! Riley has incurred to-date around $6k in bills for her two knee surgeries. Several people have encouraged me to start a indiegogo or gofundme campaign, but I feel really uncomfortable just asking people for money outright. I'm not saying this is a bad way to pay for your pet's medical bills, I just don't personally want to go this route. My only other option in this case is to advertise through my blog.
This is where Amazon Affiliates comes into play! I would much rather get paid to show my blog readers the items that have been most helpful to me with my dogs. I can link to any products on Amazon that I know and love to get a small amount of $ from people clicking the links or buying the products. Every single penny that I receive from these advertisements will go to paying down Riley's medical bills. As soon as I've hit $6k, I will turn off all the ad content. Riley is doing SO much better since her last surgery. She was a little stiff for a few weeks, but we've been giving her NaturVet Soft Chews, which contain glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, and MSM. I've seen a big difference already in her gait and flexibility. My little girl is a trooper! She's got a massive scar on her knee to show how tough she is. ;)

I signed her up for classes at the Zoom Room in Campbell a few weeks before we realized she needed surgery to remove the infected plate/screws in her leg. Well, this past Saturday we went to our first class and she was a superstar! We worked on "watch me", "stay", "wait", "touch", and "heel". She did great at every command and only broke her stay on 2 occasions when another owner said "OKAY!" and clapped for their dog very loudly. She learned very quickly that she needed to pay attention to me and not the other owners.
We played a fun game where the instructor gave us each a stack of leis and had us put our pups in a sit/stay. The challenge was to see who could finish putting the leis around their dog's neck without them standing up. The prize was a doggie donut. Guess who won? :D Riley sat very still and patiently waited while I put on all the leis. She absolutely did not budge an inch. It only took us one try! Of course, I was a terrible mom and made her do a "wait" with the doggie donut on her nose for a cute picture. We had so much fun and are excited to go to our next class!
Recently, there was an unofficial Yelp event at our local dog training club - "Doggie Disco" at the Zoom Room in Campbell. They had a bunch of agility equipment, so I thought it would be fun to take Riley and see if she enjoyed it. (The infection in her knee didn't affect her mobility at all and she had lots of energy to burn.) She absolutely loved it! We had to raise up the jumps/hoop to the highest level and she cleared them with ease. I think we're going to try agility once she's recovered from her surgery.
I signed her up for an evaluation first to see where she's at in her training. We've already done several obedience classes and I've worked with her extensively at home. I'm excited to see how well she does. My dream is to complete her CGC certification and of course we will continue with hunting once she's healed completely. The vet thinks this will be about 4 weeks. I have my *fingers crossed* that this will be the last major medical procedure we need for her knee.
Please research trainers thoroughly before you take your dog and ESPECIALLY before you send your dog alone for training. This whole ordeal has cost me well over $6k at this point. I can only take comfort in knowing that I've prevented several others from making the same mistake I did. If I can save even 1 more dog from going through this, Riley has not suffered in vain.
Well, just a few weeks ago the incision site on Riley's knee from her TPLO surgery swelled up and started oozing blood/pus. The vet had warned us this was a possible result of the plate/screws being left in her leg long-term, but we decided to take the risk and see what would happen. They have advised that we immediately have all the hardware removed. We're looking at another $1-2k in vet bills for her second surgery. I've lost track of the total at this point, but it's well over $6k. I never imagined she'd be undergoing 1 surgery, much less 2 in her first few years of life. Please take the time to research any place you send your pup. I can't stress this highly enough. I'm thankful I've been able to prevent several other people from making the mistake I did. If I can save just 1 other pup from going through what Riley has experienced, I will be happy. It's amazing how even after all these medical procedures she still loves the vets! She's such a wonderful pup and I'm lucky to have her. <3Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00129400119501421007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6097006319128873953.post-79794278384106235942013-11-08T18:42:00.000-08:002013-11-08T18:42:52.676-08:00Life Is Busy!

I haven't been blogging much. Not because I haven't *wanted* to, I've just been super busy. I'm currently studying for the CPA exam and this has been sucking up most of my free time. My poor pups would love to get back to hunting, but my weekends are now filled with watching videos and taking online practice exams.
I'm lucky Riley is such a good study buddy! We may squeeze a hike in this weekend if I can figure something out. *fingers crossed* The Vizsla group on facebook has been keeping me entertained lately. This past week we had several days dedicated to different Vizsla pictures. "Nose Day", "Paws Day", "Wiggle Butt Day", and today was "Funny Face" day. I love that group! They are so wonderful and it's fun to see all the different Vizslas from across the globe. If you haven't joined, you should!
My best friend Bree recently paid for a photoshoot so my hubby and I could get our first professional photographs done since our wedding (4 years ago). My first thought was how can we include the pups in the photos as I consider them to be a part of our family! I was thrilled to find that my alma mater, Santa Clara University, would give me a photo permit to take pictures on campus right next to the church where we were married. What you can't see in the photo above is that I'm hiding several pieces of pupperoni in my right hand after *just* getting the pups to lay down, stay still, and look at the photographer. The entire process took at least 10-15 minutes, but I'm glad we made the effort because now we have this beautiful family photo to cherish forever!
